The Connection Project of Norfolk Receives DHHS CARES Grant!

The Board of Directors of The Connection Project, Norfolk’s first and only peer-run nonprofit mental health recovery organization, is excited to announce that the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the organization a $75,000 Community CARES Response and Recovery Grant.

Funding from DHSS Community CARES Response and Recovery Grant awards is designated for projects helping communities in Nebraska respond to and recover from the impact of COVID-19.

The Connection Project will utilize CARES funds to start and operate a statewide, peer-run Warm Line during the period beginning August 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020. Well-trained Peer Specialists will provide telephone-based peer support to help individuals from across Nebraska cope with anxiety and depression and, when necessary and appropriate, to refer individuals to emergency mental health services. Peer Specialists will also refer callers to designated state or county public health authorities for answers to medical questions about COVID-19.


In Nebraska, mental health experts are reporting a significant upswing in mental health and substance use disorders since the onset of the pandemic. Ms. Sheri Dawson, Nebraska’s top mental health official, reported that there has been an increase in the number Nebraskans seeking care for behavioral health since March of 2020.


“Providing peer support through the operation of a peer-run Warm Line has proven to be a best practice during disaster responses carried out in localities and states across the nation over the last two decades” explained Tommy Newcombe, Executive Director of The Connection Project. “We are extremely grateful that DHHS is giving The Connection Project the opportunity to lend support to Nebraskans who are battling fear and stress during this pandemic.

substance use challenges, and allies who aim to better the lives of peers

and to strengthen the wider community.


The Connection Project, Inc. endeavors to enhance community participation, provide individual and group support, and facilitate educational opportunities by

building on a foundation of mutual and intentional relationships.



The Connection Project team is a group of dedicated people who all have lived experience with mental health and/or addiction.  The team consists of a Board of Directors, Executive Director, and many volunteers.  Our team is trained or being trained in Intentional Peer Support and many are Certified Peer Support Specialist through the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Consumer Affairs.
